About Richmond

Richmond, Virginia is the capital of the Commonwealth of Virginia (we take great pride in being a Commonwealth as opposed to just another State). Virginia was first settled by the English in 1607 at Jamestown, Virginia. Richmond was named after Richmond on the Thames outside of London because the view from our hills looking south along the James River resembles the same view in Richmond on the Thames.

Richmond is an historic city and it is a modern city. We are the only city in the world with Class 5 rapids in the downtown area!

Richmond is located within 100 miles of Washington DC, 50 miles of Williamsburg, and 60 miles of Charlottesville. Within a few hours one can be at the Atlantic Ocean, the Chesapeake Bay, or the Appalachian Mountains.

Rather then reinvent the wheel, we suggest that you follow this link provided by Virginia Commonwealth University (did we mention that Richmond is a university town with three universities, a seminary, and three other college branches within the city limits?).
